Monitor the security state of Java runtime environments

Last August we announced Resource Discovery and Monitoring features içinde OS Management Service (OSMS) which enabled you to know what’s running on your OSMS managed compute instances. This included features to auto-discover and identify application servers such as WebLogic Server and Tomcat and monitor their state and CPU and memory utilization.

Today, we offer a new integration with Java Management Service (JMS), the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure service which helps administrators manage their Java runtime environments. With the JMS integration, the Java runtime used by WebLogic Server and Tomcat are auto-detected, their versions identified, and their security state is also automatically assessed. If the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is up to date or requires an update (for supported versions) or an upgrade (for unsupported/EOSL versions), that will be highlighted for you to take the appropriate action.

If the JRE is up to date, you should see this verification of its security state:

If the JRE is still supported but needs an update, you should see this type of security state:

Drilling down on the security state by clicking on Update available link brings you to the Java Management Service page where you can get more details on the update recommendation.

If your JRE is an unsupported version, you should see this type of security state:

Now, not only will you have visibility into the applications that are running on your compute instances, you’ll also be able to easily track the security state of all Java runtimes that these applications depend on.

Easy and immediate access to OS Management and Java Management Service

OS Management Service is available at no additional cost for OCI subscribers and can be used with minimal configuration. Java Management Service may be used by licensees of the Oracle Java SE Subscription and Java SE Desktop Subscription offerings and by users of Java SE on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure services that permit access to the underlying operating system. Anyone who needs to keep their OS instances secure, optimized, and get visibility into their running applications and JREs can get immediate benefit from the OS Management and Java Management services.

Getting Started

These features are available on all Oracle Linux-based OCI compute instances that are managed by the OS Management Service. For information on how to enable the Resource Discovery and Monitoring features with the JMS integration, refer to the documentation.
